You can find the author name, author email, the commit hash etc of the last modified source file line by line. There is a plugin called Fugitive that provides a variety of git functions. https://github.com/tpope/vim-fugitive. It provides, among others, the ":Gblame" command which does what you want. I've mapped this command to gb in my own .vimrc .

I prefer to write my git commit messages in Vim instead of nano or emacs or anything. First, a quick review: Git uses a series of configuration files to determine non-default behavior that you may want. The first place Git looks for these values is in the system-wide [path]/etc/gitconfig file, which contains settings that are applied to every user on the system and all of their repositories.
